Paris Saint Germain’s quest for their first Champions League trophy has ended after losing to Bayern Munich in the round of 16.

Coming into the second leg, PSG knew they had work to do after losing the first leg 1-0 at the Parc des Princes, with former player Kingsley Coman netting the winner for Bayern.

During what was a cagey first half, PSG had the best chance after Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer’s blunder led to a real chance for the French side to score.

Portuguese midfielder Vitinha had a shot but was denied in wonderful fashion by Bayern centre-back Matthijs de Ligt who threw himself to make a stunning goal-line clearance.

In the second half, both teams looked to score the go-ahead goal.

With 61 minutes on the clock, PSG midfielder Marco Verratti was caught in possession inside his own box.

Leon Goretzka showed brilliant composure to square the ball to Eric Maxim Choupo Moting, who was unmarked to tap home.

After going 1-0 down on the night and 2-0 down on aggregate, PSG needed at least two goals in the remaining 30 minutes to salvage their Champions League campaign.

Kylian Mbappe had a couple chances but they simply couldn’t create enough big chances to worry the Bavarian club.

As PSG chased their much-needed goals, Bayern began to create chances on the counter as the Parisian club flooded men forward.

However, PSG were unable to break through the stubborn Bayern defence and Serge Gnabry sealed the match with a goal in the 90th minute to make it 2-0.

Julian Nagelsmann’s men held on for the victory and secured their place in the last eight of the competition.

It is yet another disappointing European campaign for PSG as their wait for a first Champions League trophy continues.

Many felt with the likes of Lionel Messi, Mbappe and Neymar in their squad, this season will finally be the one they go all the way in Europe’s elite competition, but it was not meant to be.
