An extraordinary find was made in Opava-Kateřinky. While checking the beets, the finder, who wishes to remain anonymous, discovered a jewel. According to preliminary estimates, it is a golden diadem from the Bronze Age. By law, the Moravian-Silesian Region is the owner of the discovery, the jewel was added to the collection of the Regional Museum in Bruntál.
“Thank you to the finder who found such a rare item by complete accident. A similar event happens once every few years. This time we are holding in our hands a piece of jewelry probably made of pure gold weighing 600 grams, which, according to preliminary estimates, adorned its owner sometime in the Middle or Younger Bronze Age. At first glance, this is a really valuable find. It is great that the finder behaved honestly and handed over the jewel to the museum immediately. The finder deserves thanks and, of course, by law, a reward in the amount of ten percent of the expert estimate. He will receive the reward only after the object has been properly assessed and priced,” said Lukáš Curylo, Deputy Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region for Culture and Monument Care.
The golden diadem was hidden for thousands of years just below the surface, it was discovered on September 27, 2022 after harvesting beets on private land. In the following days, the honest finder handed it over to the Silesian Regional Museum. Similar finds belong to the region in whose territory they were found, according to the Act on Monument Preservation.
“For any museum worker, such a discovery is a great event. We directly touch history, we have the opportunity to uncover ancient secrets. The discovery of the treasure is only the first point in the long process that awaits us. It will now be necessary to have the jewelry treated and to order the processing of a professional expert opinion, which will determine the cultural-historical value of the find. At the same time, we will find the most suitable location for the object that will be part of our museum’s collections. Visitors could see the tiara with their own eyes at the end of next year at the earliest,” concluded the director of the Museum in Bruntál, Ema Havelková.
